Longevity at the Level of the Lived Life: from mechanism to method

Animal Longevity Summit, Toronto, October 1-2 2026

Penny Wood is a Longevity Zoologist working at the applied end of animal ageing, across companion animals and zoo species. She translates findings from longevity science into environmental and behavioural design that an owner or an institution can actually deliver, and works with zoos on habitat and rehabilitation projects. Her background is in animal welfare and cognitive ethology.

Listed in the order they appear in the talk.

I work at the applied end, which means almost all of this is other people's research.

The distance between what a laboratory finds and what an animal actually experiences is where I spend my time. If you are working on something that belongs in that gap, or you know of work I should have found and haven't, I would like to hear from you.

The Five Spheres of Nature, the Seven Pillars of Animal Longevity, the Wellbeing Triad (Healthspan, Joyspan, Lifespan) and Rewilding Animal Welfare 360 are frameworks developed by Dr Zoolittle.

You ask about longevity at the level of the molecule. I ask at the level of the lived life.

What wild animals do by default, domestic animals have to be given by design.

Anthropocentric assumption is what we have always imagined. Zoöpocentric evidence is what she shows us. She has been showing us the whole time.
